Summer & Christmas Informal Dances

As well as the main ball, The Perth Ball organises two informal dances a year, one in the summer and one just before Christmas.  Formerly known as the ‘Picnic Dances’, they aim to introduce children and young teenagers to the fun of reeling and are always hugely popular.  Many young who learn to reel at these dances go on to enjoy the main Perth Ball when they turn 18.

There are two dances a year: the Summer Picnic Dance at the end of August and the Christmas Picnic Dance which always happens on the 23rd December.  Being at a time when people tend to have a house full of family staying, the Christmas Dance is much more of an all-ages event, from grandparents to tiny tots.

The dance takes place in the sparkly Fingask Castle Pavilion with music provided by the the wonderful Willie Simpson and his Band.

The evening kicks off with a Dashing White Sergeant and Strip the Willow, followed by the Reel of the 51st Highland Division.  After supper it’s time to tackle some slightly more complicated reels, including another go at the 51st.  With plenty of experience adult reelers on hand (and this key!) everyone soon gets the hang of it.

perthball20Both Picnic Dances are sell-out events, so it’s advisable to book early.

Notes for Hosts:

  • If you have lots of young children or beginners in your party make sure you have some experienced adults there too who are prepared to dance and help out.
  • Supper is now included in the ticket price.  Typical menu might be lasagne, baked potatoes and salad.  Water and glasses will be provided but no other drink is included.  Covered tables seating approximately 10 are available and seating can be arranged for parties large or small.
  • As the main aim of the dance is to teach the young, parties without children or teenagers are not encouraged due to limited space.
  • Children under 9 only with the Perth Ball Chairman’s permission please, with the exception of the Christmas Dance when all ages are welcome.
